Anonymous said: Hey I love your blog! I have exams coming up and I was wondering if you had any advice for people like me who suffer from anxiety and an intense fear of failure? Also, I'm the kind of person who procrastinates on studying out of fear of not doing as well as I should be doing, even though I know studying would change that. Do have any tips on how to overcome this? Thank you :)

I will say this until my dying gasp of air: done is better than perfect.

Do it first, do it poorly if you must, because it’s a lot less daunting to edit something than it is to start something.

Do what is most urgent. If you’ve procrastinated and have to catch up on stuff, do the most recent material first. Most times you can hack it and at least brute memorize the recent stuff. If you have time, go over the material you have to catch up on. It seems counter intuitive (everybody goes you must understand the material), but it’s a lot less stressful to focus on the most recent material instead of a ginormous backlog.

Stay healthy. Anxiety hits you like a brick over the head if you’re sleep deprived and/or starving/bloated/etc. Possibly TMI, but if you tend to have your cycle around exam times (like me, FML, right?), being healthy will take off most of the ‘can-i-just-bloody-murder-somebody-right-now’ edge. That, and aspirin. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy.

  • Sleeping rule of thumb: Get at least 6 hours. Don’t sleep more than 9 hours.
  • Drink water: at least one bottle.
  • Eat 3 meals. Snack in between if you’re hungry. 70% healthy foods aim. Sometimes you just have to go for the chips.
  • Take a fast walk. 10-15 minutes with music. It’s enough to clear your mind.

I like: studymuse for study motivation. Her queue’s still running but she’s on hiatus atm.

Here are two articles about failure: how to be okay with the possibility of failing AND how to deal with failure after the fact

Schedule. Shit. Out. Figure out exactly what you need to know before the exams and what you’re going to study every day leading up to the exam period. You may not follow the schedule 100%, but at least you will know just how much you have to get done. Anxiety is awful because it over inflates your speculations. Having a list of everything you need to get done actually helps me with my anxiety just because A) it’s not as much as I expected, B) it’s more than I expected but at least I know what to expect now. Either way, I feel more relieved.

Aim for 4-5 hours of studying every day. You can still have a life on Friday/Saturdays/Sundays, but do try to at least finish 1-2 tasks (outline a chapter, finish a review sheet, write your flash cards, spend 2 hours memorizing flash cards, listing questions you need to ask prof/TA) on those days.

Hope that helped!

Oohhh. Also. If you’re having a hard time focusing to start with, put in some earphones and listen to music. I don’t care if it has words, just listen to something that will distract you from your anxiety. Listen to the music, start your work, once you get in the zone, you can take out the earphones or leave them in if you can still focus with them.

I’m probably the only person who isn’t a fan of the Chelsea and Vaughn pairing.
In the game, it makes sense, and he’s a fun bachelor to court. It feels rewarding to get closer to him. But in the fanfiction atmosphere, I never like how Chelsea is written when she’s involved romantically with Vaughn. Maybe I’m just too concerned for him, but his character always dramatically alters once he ‘falls for her.’ Sure, he’s prone to blush from teasing, and he’s more open with those he’s close to, but it’s always an extreme change into a whole new person. He becomes all lovey-dovey and cheery and incredibly annoying, and I find it really unrealistic. It reminds me of that age old ‘I can change him’ shtick that’s ruined hundreds of characters and their stories.
As a general grumpy-girl, I think it’s fair for me to vouch and say Vaughn isn’t going to change his attitude just because he likes somebody! In the game, he warms up to the main character, but he still remains standoffish with other people, and he tends to be quiet and to the point. I wish more people would keep him in character because it makes me generally dislike any stories concerning Vaughn with a love interest of any kind because I don’t trust them anymore.

…I think Draco would be very gifted in Occlumency, unlike Harry. Harry’s problem with it was always that his emotions were too near the surface and that he is in some ways too damaged. But he’s also very in touch with his feelings about what’s happened to him. He’s not repressed, he’s quite honest about facing them, and he couldn’t suppress them, he couldn’t suppress these memories. But I thought of Draco as someone who is very capable of compartmentalizing his life and his emotions, and always has done. So he’s shut down his pity, enabling him to bully effectively. He’s shut down compassion — how else would you become a Death Eater? So he suppresses virtually all of the good side of himself.
